The 12-term Texas congressman, who is campaigning against Mitt Romney, Rick Santorum and Newt Gingrich for the GOP nomination, is visiting three college campuses in California this week.
The town hall-style meeting, which will take place at 7 p.m. at Straus Stadium at the Los Angeles Tennis Center on the UCLA campus, has been organized by Youth for Ron Paul, which has more than 591 chapters on college campuses throughout the country and a membership approaching 60,000.
There are almost 60 chapters in California. The UCLA chapter, which is the campaign’s fifth largest with 1,402 members, had originally planned for the rally to be held at the Sunset Canyon Recreation Center but was moved to the larger venue after receiving more than 4,900 RSVPs.
According to the website for Youth for Ron Paul, the organization’s goal is “to identify, recruit, educate and mobilize students and young activists to elect Ron Paul President of the United States.”
Paul, who hasn’t won a primary or a caucus in the GOP presidential race, planned the swing through the state weeks ago, according to Edward King, national youth director for Ron Paul 2012.
Also on the schedule are private fundraisers. Last night at Cal State Chico, Paul spoke to a crowd estimated by his staff at more than 6,200 students, faculty and residents.
He discussed his "Plan to Restore America," his platform for economic development, which includes trimming $1 trillion from the federal budget during his first year in office with the goal of balancing the budget within three years.
Wednesday night's event will cost the UCLA Ron Paul youth chapter $5,000, according to King.
